Discourses of the States

by traditionally Zuo Qiuming (5th century BC)Translated by Valentin Sarić

Before the empire, eight states: Zhou, Lu, Qi, Jin, Zheng, Chu, Wu and Yue. The Discourses of the States collects the speeches of their ministers, advisers and rulers, arranged state by state over five centuries: remonstrances with kings, debates on war and ritual, prophecies that come true, and the long drama of Jin under Duke Wen, the exile who returned to become hegemon. It ends with Goujian of Yue and his minister Fan Li, who sails away on the Five Lakes once revenge is complete. Traditionally ascribed to Zuo Qiuming, author of the Zuo Commentary, it is the companion to that great chronicle. This complete new English translation gives the whole work. Names are given in modern pinyin, offices and titles are rendered plainly, and the narrative runs as continuous English prose, so the book can be read straight through by anyone curious about China's past, not only by specialists.
