Master Pheasant Cap
A recluse of Chu who wore a cap of pheasant feathers and never gave his name: so the tradition describes the author of this unusual Warring States book. Master Pheasant Cap blends the Way and its Virtue with cosmology, statecraft and military thought, in dialogues with his disciple Pang Xuan, a general of Zhao. It speaks of the Grand Unity, the cycles of the heavens, the ruler who governs by following natural order, and the qualities of the worthy minister, in a dense and sometimes poetic style. Long dismissed as a forgery, it is now recognised as a genuine pre-Qin text close to the Huang-Lao tradition. This complete new English translation renders all the surviving chapters, from Broad Selection to King Wuling, in clear modern English.
