More Records of the Mysterious and Strange

A man whose marriage is already written in a book of fate, read by an old man by moonlight; a sleeper who wakes to find himself transformed into a fish; officials of the underworld who come for the wrong man. Li Fuyan's More Records of the Mysterious and Strange is one of the finest Tang collections of chuanqi, the literary tale of the uncanny, and the source of the Chinese legend of the Old Man under the Moon who ties lovers together with a red thread. The stories are crafted, witty and often haunting, set among examination candidates, travellers and minor officials of Tang China. This complete new English translation gives all four scrolls. Names are given in modern pinyin and the stories are rendered in plain, lively English, so they can be dipped into at random or read straight through, a feast for lovers of ghost stories, myth and folklore.
