The Bamboo Annals
In AD 281 grave robbers broke into the tomb of a king of Wei and found bamboo strips that had lain underground for nearly six hundred years. Among them was a chronicle of China from the Yellow Emperor to the Warring States, and it told a different story from the official histories: here the sage-king Shun imprisons Yao, and Yi is killed for usurping the throne. The Bamboo Annals record reigns, eclipses, floods, campaigns, portents and the doings of kings in brief year-by-year entries, the skeleton of early Chinese history as one state's archivists remembered it. This complete new English translation covers the received version of the annals, from the Yellow Emperor through Xia, Shang and Zhou to the kings of Wei, a compact and fascinating companion to Sima Qian's Grand Scribe's Records.
