The Book of Documents
The speeches and decrees of China's earliest rulers. The Book of Documents gathers the canons of the sage-kings Yao and Shun, the labours of Great Yu who tamed the flood, the oaths sworn before battle by the founders of Shang and Zhou, and the solemn announcements of the Duke of Zhou to a conquered people. Here first appear the Mandate of Heaven, the idea that Heaven raises virtuous rulers and casts down tyrants, and the image of the minister who must speak hard truths to his lord. Revered as a classic for two thousand years, the book was the model for all later Chinese statecraft and political rhetoric. This complete new English translation covers the full received text, from the Canon of Yao to the Oath of Qin, in direct modern English.
