The Cases of Judge Dee

English Edition: The Complete Tang Dynasty Mystery Novel

by AnonymousTranslated by Valentin Sarić

In the courts of Tang dynasty China, one magistrate's deductive brilliance became so legendary that thirteen centuries later, a Dutch sinologist would spend the rest of his life writing English novels about him.

The Cases of Judge Dee (狄公案) is the great Qing dynasty masterpiece of Chinese gong'an (court-case) fiction, built around the real historical figure of Di Renjie (630–700) - the Tang statesman whose deductive genius, unbending integrity, and political survival under the reign of Empress Wu Zetian made him one of the most celebrated figures in Chinese history. When the Dutch diplomat and sinologist Robert van Gulik translated the novel's first thirty chapters in 1949 under the title Dee Goong An, he was so captivated by his protagonist that he went on to write a long series of original Judge Dee novels in English - single-handedly introducing the Tang magistrate to the West as China's own Sherlock Holmes. It was a fitting reversal: only decades earlier, the first Chinese translators of Conan Doyle had presented Holmes to their readers as "the English Judge Bao."

This edition presents the complete sixty-four chapter novel in modern, readable English - picking up where van Gulik's celebrated translation left off, and bringing the second half of the original Chinese novel into English for the first time. The first half follows Judge Dee through three intricately interwoven murder cases in the district of Changping: poisonings disguised as illness, a locked-room killing, a missing bride whose disappearance unravels a far darker conspiracy. The second half follows his rise to the imperial court, where his sharpest investigations are no longer of murderers but of the deadly intrigues surrounding Empress Wu Zetian, her favorites, and the future of the Tang dynasty itself.

Murders disguised as accidents, accidents revealed as murders, ghostly omens, palace conspiracies, confessions extracted through pure psychological pressure, and clever criminals undone by a single overlooked detail - every chapter showcases the deductive theatre that would define East Asian detective fiction for centuries.

Alongside The Cases of Judge Bao, The Cases of Judge Hai, The Cases of Magistrate Shi, and The Cases of Judge Peng, this collection stands as one of the five great pillars of the gong'an tradition - and the only one whose protagonist, a thousand years later, would conquer the Western literary imagination as well.
