The Forest of Changes

by Jiao Gan (fl. 1st century BC, Western Han)Translated by Valentin Sarić

The Forest of Changes gives a four-line verse oracle for every one of the 4,096 combinations of the hexagrams of the Book of Changes: tiny, strange poems of roads, rivers, birds, weddings and wars. Used for divination for two thousand years, the verses are also miniature poems of great charm and oddity, full of folk images, travellers, omens and proverbs. This is a complete new English translation, with names in modern pinyin and the text rendered as plain, readable English prose. It is short enough to read in an evening and deep enough to return to for years, and the English keeps the paradoxes and stories intact. The early Chinese thinkers argued about the same questions we still ask: how to live, how to govern, what is natural and what can be known.
