The Lost Book of Zhou
The documents that did not make it into the Book of Documents. The Lost Book of Zhou gathers about seventy chapters of speeches, instructions, military plans and ritual records from the Zhou dynasty, some of them very old: the conquest of Shang described in brutal detail, the instructions of King Wen and King Wu, the counsel of the Duke of Zhou, the calendar of seasons and the meaning of posthumous names, and a remarkable catalogue of tribute from distant peoples. It is uneven, damaged in places and long neglected, which makes it all the more fascinating as a window on how the Zhou remembered their own rise. This complete new English translation covers the whole received text, including the preface to the book.
