The Master of the Golden Tower
Xiao Yi, a prince and later emperor of the Liang dynasty, owned a library of a hundred and forty thousand scrolls, and when his capital fell to the enemy he burned them all. Before that he wrote The Master of the Golden Tower, a personal miscellany of history, admonitions, anecdotes, records of consorts and rulers, instructions to his sons, notes on book-collecting and lists of marvels. It is one of the few surviving books of its kind written by a ruler, erudite, proud and revealing. This complete new English translation gives all six scrolls with the preface. Names are given in modern pinyin and technical terms are rendered plainly, so this treasure-house of early Chinese knowledge can be browsed or read straight through in natural English.
