The National Beauty and Heavenly Fragrance
First Complete English Translation
Once banned, whispered, and circulated in secret - now revealed in full for the first time in English.
The National Beauty and Heavenly Fragrance / 中國十大禁書之國色天香 is a celebrated yet long-suppressed Chinese literary work traditionally listed among the “Ten Forbidden Books” of imperial China. Compiled during the late Ming period by Jingsuo Wu (active 16th century), this collection blends classical storytelling, refined poetry, historical upheaval, and lyrical erotic suggestion into a uniquely elegant literary form.
Set against a backdrop of war, exile, and dynastic decline, the narratives follow scholars, warriors, and gifted women whose beauty and talent are inseparable from the political and moral turbulence of their age. The work moves fluidly between prose and verse, where emotion, loyalty, intellect, and desire coexist within a classical aesthetic framework.
Unlike later sensationalist erotic literature, this text belongs to an older tradition in which desire is inseparable from fate, virtue, and historical consequence. Its prohibition was as much ideological as moral: the book celebrates individual emotion and aesthetic freedom in tension with strict Confucian orthodoxy.
This edition presents the first complete English translation, carefully rendered to preserve the original tone, poetic cadence, and cultural nuance. It offers modern readers rare access to a foundational yet long-hidden work of Chinese literary heritage.
