The Secret History of the Mongols

by Anonymous (13th century, Mongol Empire)Translated by Valentin Sarić

The only account of Chinggis Khan written by his own people. The Secret History of the Mongols begins with a blue-grey wolf and a fallow doe, and follows the boy Temujin through fatherlessness, poverty, capture and escape to the feuds, oaths and battles that made him ruler of all the felt-tent peoples. It is a book of hard steppe life and blood brotherhood, of betrayal by friends and loyalty from unexpected men, of horses, hunts and alliances sealed by marriage, told in a voice that mixes chronicle, epic and song. The text survived only in a Ming-dynasty Chinese transcription, and this complete new English translation is made from that Chinese version, with its postface, carrying the story through the conquests and into the reign of Ogedei.
