The Songs of Chu

by Qu Yuan (c. 340–278 BC, state of Chu) and othersTranslated by Valentin Sarić

Qu Yuan, a loyal minister of Chu slandered and exiled, wandered by the rivers composing poems of grief and finally drowned himself in the Miluo, and the Dragon Boat Festival still commemorates him. The Songs of Chu gather the poems ascribed to him and his followers: Encountering Sorrow, a great visionary journey through heaven in search of a worthy lord; the Nine Songs, hymns to the gods of the rivers and stars sung by shamans; the riddling Heavenly Questions; and the Summons of the Soul, calling the spirit home from the terrors of the four directions. This complete new English translation, set as verse, gives the core collection from the Li Sao to the Great Summons. Names are given in modern pinyin, the verse is set as verse, and allusions are kept rather than explained away, so the book can be read with pleasure by anyone who loves poetry.
