Dream of the Green Mansions, Volume 1
Dream of the Green Mansions (青樓夢)
Jin Yixiang, a gifted young man of Suzhou, makes friends with thirty-six courtesans, wins all their hearts, passes the examinations, marries five of them and finally discovers that they were all fairies. Dream of the Green Mansions is a dreamy, indulgent courtesan fantasy inspired by the Dream of the Red Chamber. This first volume brings Jin Yixiang into the world of the Suzhou courtesans. This complete new English translation is published in two volumes; this is Volume 1 of 2, and the whole set is also available as a bundle. Like the best scholar-and-beauty novels it moves quickly, with disguises, poems exchanged in secret, examinations, villains and a hard-won happy ending. These romances were the popular reading of their day, devoured by young men and women, imitated on the stage and admired abroad, and they remain charming, quick and surprising.
