歡喜冤家

Lovers and Foes, Volume 1

Lovers and Foes (歡喜冤家)

by Xihu Yuyin Zhuren (fl. 1640, late Ming)Translated by Valentin Sarić

Lovers and Foes is a late-Ming collection of twenty-four erotic-comic stories about desire and its consequences: wives and lovers, monks and nuns, merchants away from home, clever maids and jealous husbands, schemes in teahouses and temples, and the courts that sort out the wreckage. Frank, funny and often cruel, the stories are a vivid record of city life in the seventeenth century, told with the moral 'what goes around comes around'. This first volume holds the first twelve stories. This complete new English translation is published in two volumes; this is Volume 1 of 2, and the whole set is also available as a bundle. For adult readers: the book contains explicit sexual content. Each story stands alone and can be read in a sitting, and together they give a lively picture of everyday Chinese life: markets, inns, temples, courts and bedrooms.
