Marriage Destinies to Awaken the World
English Edition - The Complete Unabridged Translation
Step into one of the great unread epics of Chinese literature - a sprawling, morally ferocious saga of desire, cruelty, karma, and rebirth spanning two lifetimes, now presented complete and unabridged in English for the first time in Marriage Destinies to Awaken the World (醒世姻緣傳).
Written in the late seventeenth century and traditionally linked by some scholars to Pu Songling, the celebrated author of Strange Tales from a Chinese Studio, this monumental novel spans one hundred chapters and over one million words in the original Chinese - and has never before received a full English rendering. Only scattered academic fragments have previously appeared in translation. This edition presents, for the first time, the entire novel in one continuous English volume.
The story opens with Chao Yuan, a young man of privilege whose restless appetites set the entire machinery of the novel in motion. A hunting expedition ends in the killing of a fox spirit - an act that will not stay buried. Drawn instead to the pleasure quarters and the courtesan Zhen Ge, Chao Yuan neglects and mistreats his principal wife, setting in motion a debt that his own death will not settle.
That debt comes due in the novel's second, longer movement, when Chao Yuan is reborn as Di Xichen - and finds himself bound for life to a shrewish, tormenting wife who is, unknown to him, the very spirit he once wronged. What follows is one of Chinese literature's most extraordinary studies of marriage as cosmic reckoning: decades of domestic torment rendered with equal parts satire, pathos, and unflinching realism, as every cruelty of the first life is answered, in kind, in the second.
Blending Buddhist karma, social satire, and psychologically acute domestic drama, Marriage Destinies to Awaken the World is less a ghost story than a study of consequence itself - a reminder that nothing is ever truly forgotten, only deferred. For scholars, it's a missing link between vernacular fiction and Pu Songling's supernatural worldview; for general readers, it's simply one of the most gripping and morally charged family sagas ever written.
This English translation by Valentin Sarić renders the complete Marriage Destinies to Awaken the World in clear, literary prose for contemporary readers - the full hundred-chapter epic, unabridged, in a single continuous edition, preserving the tone, moral nuance, and narrative rhythm of the original for the first time in English.
