忠孝勇烈奇女傳

Mulan

Loyal, Filial, Brave, and Fierce (Zhongxiao Yonglie Qinüzhuan - 忠孝勇烈奇女傳): The First Complete English Translation

by Yingyuan JiuzhuTranslated by Valentin Sarić

She fought for her father. She fought for her empire. She could not fight the throne that destroyed her.

The real Mulan - finally told in full.

About the Book

Before Disney. Before the ballad. Before legend hardened into myth - there was this novel.

In Qing-dynasty China, an anonymous master expanded the thirty-line folk poem into a thirty-two-chapter epic of war, sorcery, and sacrifice. Zhu Mulan is the daughter of a great family, heir to a secret book of esoteric arts, and a warrior of terrifying skill. Disguised as a man, she takes her aging father's place in the imperial army, fights campaigns that would break any soldier, and rises to glory.

Then the emperor's suspicion turns on her - and glory becomes a death sentence.

This is not the story you know. There is no homecoming. No dress. No happy ending.

Spanning two generations, the novel opens with Mulan's grandfather Zhu Ruoxu, who learns dark Daoist magic from the celestial master Li Jing, refuses in monastic discipline to wield it himself, and passes the forbidden knowledge to his granddaughter on his deathbed. What follows is a supernatural military epic fused with the most demanding strains of Confucian moral philosophy: loyalty, filial piety, heroic courage - and martyrdom.

The full title says it plainly: Loyal. Filial. Brave. Fierce.

About This Edition

This is the first complete English translation of Zhongxiao Yonglie Qinüzhuan - the full thirty-two-chapter Qing novel, not the ballad, not the plays, not the summaries. For three centuries, Western readers have encountered only fragments and retellings. This edition renders the complete text for the first time, through Valentin Sarić's trilingual process across Classical Chinese, Croatian, and English.

Sarić's translation preserves the vernacular vitality of Qing-dynasty prose - its humor, its moral weight, its moments of supernatural strangeness - while delivering natural, powerful modern English. Scholars of Chinese literature, readers of myth and legend, and everyone who sensed that the real Mulan story ran deeper than any adaptation will find here what they were missing.

Themes & Legacy

  • The legend of Mulan in its fullest, darkest, most complete form
  • Daoist esoteric arts, celestial masters, and inherited supernatural power
  • Filial devotion, military heroism, and the cost of female excellence in a man's world
  • The tragedy of loyalty betrayed by the very throne it served
  • A Confucian martyrdom that Disney could never tell
