Poetry Talks from the Sui Garden, Volume 3
Poetry Talks from the Sui Garden (隨園詩話)
Yuan Mei's Poetry Talks from the Sui Garden is the most entertaining book about poetry in Chinese: anecdotes, gossip and quoted lines. Yuan Mei quotes poems by friends, women, monks and strangers, champions natural feeling over rules and fills the book with wit and generosity. This third volume completes the collection with the supplementary scrolls. This complete new English translation is published in three volumes; this is Volume 3 of 3, and the whole set is also available as a bundle. It is a book to dip into: short entries, sharp judgements and many quoted lines, a conversation with the best readers of Chinese poetry. Traditional Chinese criticism was written by poets for poets, and it is full of anecdotes, quotations and memorable verdicts that bring the poems and poets to life.
