Strange Tales from Liaozhai, Volume 1
Strange Tales from Liaozhai (聊齋志異)
Pu Songling's Strange Tales from Liaozhai is the most loved collection of the supernatural in Chinese: nearly five hundred stories of fox spirits who fall in love with poor scholars, ghosts who keep house, painted women who step out of walls, Daoist conjurors, corrupt officials punished in the underworld and examinations that go terribly wrong. Wry, tender and often frightening, the tales are written in a polished classical style that Pu spent his whole life refining. This first volume opens with the earliest scrolls, including the City God examination, the painted wall and many of the best-known fox and ghost stories. This complete new English translation is published in three volumes; this is Volume 1 of 3, and the whole set is also available as a bundle.
