The Cases Of Judge Hai

First Complete English Edition

by AnonymousTranslated by Valentin Sarić

For the first time in any Western language, the complete seventy-one chapters of 海公案 - one of the five great gong'an novels of imperial China - are available in English.

The Cases of Judge Hai is a Qing dynasty courtroom novel built around the legendary figure of Hai Rui (海瑞, 1514–1587), the most celebrated incorruptible official in Chinese history. A real Ming dynasty magistrate whose defiance of imperial corruption became the stuff of national legend, Hai Rui was immortalized in this sprawling work of fiction as the archetypal righteous judge - fearless before the powerful, compassionate toward the common people, and relentless in the pursuit of justice.

The novel opens with the supernatural circumstances of Hai Rui's birth and follows his rise from a precocious, morally steadfast youth to one of the most feared and admired magistrates of his era. Across seventy-one self-contained yet interconnected chapters, he confronts a parade of cases - murders, frauds, conspiracies, corruption among the gentry, and crimes tangled with the supernatural - each revealing the rot beneath the surface of late imperial society.

Part biography, part casebook, part moral allegory, The Cases of Judge Hai stands alongside the four other pillars of the gong'an genre:

  • 包公案 - The Cases of Judge Bao (Song dynasty setting) • 狄公案 - The Cases of Judge Dee (Tang dynasty setting) • 施公案 - The Cases of Judge Shi (Qing dynasty setting) • 彭公案 - The Cases of Judge Peng (Qing dynasty setting)

While Judge Dee achieved Western fame through Robert van Gulik's mid-twentieth-century translations and adaptations, and Judge Bao remains iconic in Chinese popular culture, Judge Hai has until now remained entirely inaccessible to English-language readers - despite being grounded in one of the most historically significant figures in all of Chinese political history.

This edition, published by Canvas Editions, presents the complete and unabridged text in a faithful English translation, preserving the novel's episodic structure, its blend of realism and the fantastic, and its unflinching portrait of justice in a world ruled by power, privilege, and superstition.
