The Elder Dai's Book of Rites
The sister collection of the Book of Rites, assembled by the Han ritual scholar Dai De, the elder of two Dais. The Elder Dai's Book of Rites preserves texts found nowhere else: Confucius's conversations with Duke Ai of Lu and with Zengzi on filial piety, the ten chapters of Master Zeng, the Xia calendar with its seasonal signs of birds, insects and stars, the genealogy of the five emperors, the rites of coming of age and the education of the heir. It shows the variety of Confucian teaching before the canon closed, and many of its chapters are as readable as the Analects. This complete new English translation covers all the surviving chapters of the work in clear modern English.
