The Steadfast Lover
Shuang Xing, a young scholar, refuses every match his mother proposes and travels until he finds the brilliant Jiang Ruiyun. But a powerful official wants her as tribute for the palace. The Steadfast Lover is a tense scholar-and-beauty romance about faithfulness under pressure. This is a complete new English translation, with names in modern pinyin and the text rendered as plain, readable English prose. Like the best scholar-and-beauty novels it moves quickly, with disguises, poems exchanged in secret, examinations, villains and a hard-won happy ending. These romances were the popular reading of their day, devoured by young men and women, imitated on the stage and admired abroad, and they remain charming, quick and surprising. It is an ideal book for curious readers who want to explore Chinese literature and thought beyond the few famous titles, in a clear modern English version.
