What Confucius Did Not Speak Of, Volume 2

What Confucius Did Not Speak Of (子不語)

by Yuan Mei (1716–1798, Qing dynasty)Translated by Valentin Sarić

Confucius would not talk about prodigies, feats of strength, disorder or spirits, so the poet Yuan Mei, retired to his famous garden in Nanjing, collected them all. What Confucius Did Not Speak Of gathers hundreds of brisk, often mischievous accounts of hauntings, possessions, fox spirits, walking corpses, vengeful ghosts and bureaucratic gods, told as gossip from friends, officials and servants. Sceptical and amused, Yuan Mei is a superb storyteller with a sharp eye for human vanity. This second volume completes the collection, including the sequel scrolls. This complete new English translation is published in two volumes; this is Volume 2 of 2, and the whole set is also available as a bundle. These are short, vivid pieces, ideal for reading one or two at a sitting, and they open a window on what Chinese readers feared, desired and laughed at.
