A Change of Heart

by Wu Jianren (1866–1910, late Qing)Translated by Valentin Sarić

Two young lovers, a village girl who trains as a performer and a boy pledged to her, are separated by family, money and the temptations of a travelling show. A Change of Heart was Wu Jianren's last novel, left unfinished at his death, and it is one of his most tender. It shows Wu Jianren's gift for vivid characters and his sympathy for young lovers. This is a complete new English translation, with names in modern pinyin and the text rendered as plain, readable English prose. Written as the empire was collapsing, it shows China meeting steamships, newspapers, foreign concessions and reform, and it is sharper and funnier than most readers expect. Very little of this extraordinary body of fiction has been translated, and it shows a China in rapid, painful and often absurd transformation.
