The Nine-Tailed Fox, Volume 1

The Nine-Tailed Fox (九尾狐)

by Mengyou Shanren (pseudonym, fl. 1908, late Qing)Translated by Valentin Sarić

The Nine-Tailed Fox of the title is Hu Baoyu, a real and famous Shanghai courtesan of the 1880s and 90s: beautiful, clever and ruthless, she moves from client to client, city to city and theatre to theatre, leaving debts and broken men behind. It is a lively portrait of the world of the Shanghai pleasure houses at the end of the empire. This first volume follows Hu Baoyu's rise in Shanghai. This complete new English translation is published in two volumes; this is Volume 1 of 2, and the whole set is also available as a bundle. Written as the empire was collapsing, it shows China meeting steamships, newspapers, foreign concessions and reform, and it is sharper and funnier than most readers expect.
