Cold-Eyed Observations, Volume 1

Cold-Eyed Observations (冷眼觀)

by Wang Junqing (fl. 1907, late Qing)Translated by Valentin Sarić

The narrator travels through late-Qing China looking at everything with a cold eye: corrupt officials, fake reformers, opium dens, schools, yamens and brothels. Cold-Eyed Observations is a sprawling, sharp and often hilarious satire written in the last years of the empire. This first volume begins the narrator's journeys and observations. This complete new English translation is published in two volumes; this is Volume 1 of 2, and the whole set is also available as a bundle. Written as the empire was collapsing, it shows China meeting steamships, newspapers, foreign concessions and reform, and it is sharper and funnier than most readers expect. Very little of this extraordinary body of fiction has been translated, and it shows a China in rapid, painful and often absurd transformation.
