Pacification of the Bandits

The First Complete English Translation of Yu Wanchun’s Ming-Qing Masterwork

by Wanchun YuTranslated by Valentin Sarić

“If robbers may call themselves righteous, what meaning has virtue left?”

First published in the 19th century and long overshadowed by Water Margin, Wanchun’s Yu's Pacification of the Bandits (蕩寇志) stands as one of the boldest reinterpretations in Chinese literary history.

This monumental novel continues the Water Margin saga - yet turns it inside out. Where Water Margin glorified bandits as “heroes of loyalty and righteousness,” Yu Wanchun exposes their hypocrisy, showing how moral language can mask violence, corruption, and ambition. Through his powerful prose and biting irony, Yu dismantles the cult of rebellion, asking a question that still resonates: When loyalty becomes a slogan, who remains loyal to truth?

Now available for the first time in complete English translation, this edition restores the novel’s full scope and historical prefaces, allowing readers to experience the text as it was meant to challenge its predecessor.

This translation was produced through a trilingual translation process developed by Valentin Sarić, in which the original Classical Chinese was first translated into English, then refined through Croatian linguistic analysis, and finally re-rendered into polished literary English.

This method ensures faithful accuracy, cultural nuance, and poetic clarity, allowing the English text to retain both the rhythm of Chinese classical prose and the moral gravity of Yu Wanchun’s original intent.

This translation preserves the classical tone and rhythm of the original while ensuring clarity and readability for modern audiences - making it ideal for:

  • Readers of Romance of the Three Kingdoms, Outlaws of the Marsh, and Journey to the West
  • Scholars and enthusiasts of Ming - Qing narrative prose
  • Students of literature, sinology, and cultural philosophy

Wanchun Yu (俞万春, 1794 - 1849) was a late Qing scholar and novelist from Shanyin, Zhejiang. Outraged by the moral ambiguity of Water Margin, he wrote Pacification of the Bandits to “correct the world’s mistaken admiration for thieves.” His preface remains one of the earliest literary critiques of hero-worship and moral relativism in Chinese narrative tradition.

This edition presents Pacification of the Bandits as both literature and cultural dialogue - bridging centuries between Yu’s moral vision and the modern reader’s search for meaning in chaos.
