Pointing at the Moon: Records of the Zen Masters, Volume 1
Pointing at the Moon: Records of the Zen Masters (指月錄)
Qu Ruji's Record of Pointing at the Moon (1595) is the great Ming anthology of Chan (Zen) lore: the sayings, encounters, shouts, blows and enigmatic answers of the masters, arranged by lineage from the Seven Buddhas down through the Tang and Song generations. This first volume begins with the Seven Buddhas and Shakyamuni, the sutra passages beloved of Chan teachers, the Indian and Chinese patriarchs, and the first generations after Huineng. This complete new English translation is published in four volumes; this is Volume 1 of 4, and the whole set is also available as a bundle. Each volume stands on its own, and the four together give the whole Record from the Buddhas to the Song masters. Names are given in modern pinyin and the exchanges are rendered in plain, direct English, so the encounters can be read straight through or one at a time, as the koans were meant to be.
