Pointing at the Moon: Records of the Zen Masters (指月錄)

by Qu Ruji (1548–1610, Ming dynasty)Translated by Valentin Sarić

Qu Ruji's Record of Pointing at the Moon (1595) is the great Ming anthology of Chan (Zen) lore: the sayings, encounters, shouts, blows and enigmatic answers of the masters, arranged by lineage from the Seven Buddhas down through the Tang and Song generations. This second volume follows the great Tang generations after the Sixth Patriarch, the age of Mazu's heirs, Linji, Zhaozhou and Deshan. This complete new English translation is published in four volumes; this is Volume 2 of 4, and the whole set is also available as a bundle. Each volume stands on its own, and the four together give the whole Record from the Buddhas to the Song masters. Names are given in modern pinyin and the exchanges are rendered in plain, direct English, so the encounters can be read straight through or one at a time, as the koans were meant to be.
