Stones Nod Their Heads
Step into the morally charged, vividly peopled world of late-Ming storytelling in Stones Nod Their Heads (Shidiantou), a celebrated collection of vernacular tales attributed to Tianranchisou (The Naturally Untaught Elder) and long associated with the literary circle of the great storyteller-editor Feng Menglong.
The collection takes its name from an old Buddhist legend: a monk once preached the Dharma so truly that even the unfeeling stones nodded in assent. In that spirit, these fourteen tales set out to move hearts of stone — dramatizing fate, karma, devotion, betrayal, and retribution across a sweep of dynasties, households, and human failings, where a single choice can overturn a life.
The opening tale follows Guo Qiao, a gifted but luckless scholar mocked for his repeated failures in the imperial examinations and burdened by the expectations of family and society. Seizing an uncle's invitation as a chance to escape his troubles, he sets out on a journey that brings him face to face with an old man awaiting punishment and a daughter in desperate straits — and a single act of generosity sets a chain of consequences in motion, intertwining their fates in ways neither could foresee.
Across its stories the reader meets struggling scholars and proud examiners, faithful wives and faithless men, generous strangers and scheming kin, corrupt officials and unexpected redeemers — figures drawn with the wit, sympathy, and unsparing moral eye that mark the finest huaben fiction.
Blending storytelling drama, social satire, Buddhist and Confucian moral vision, and startling reversals of fortune, Stones Nod Their Heads offers modern readers a captivating window into the popular literary imagination of traditional China — where everyday lives become parables and even stone can be made to feel.
This English translation by Valentin Sarić presents Shidiantou for contemporary readers in clear, literary prose while preserving the spirit and moral force of the original tales.
