Dream of the Red Chamber, Volume 4
Dream of the Red Chamber (紅樓夢)
Dream of the Red Chamber is the greatest Chinese novel: the slow decline of the rich Jia family seen through Jia Baoyu, a boy born with a jade in his mouth, his frail and brilliant cousin Lin Daiyu, and the sensible Xue Baochai, among hundreds of sisters, cousins, maids and servants in the Prospect Garden. Poetry contests, banquets, love, intrigue and loss unfold with the detail of a whole world. This fourth volume shows the first cracks: debts, scandals, the search of the garden and the deaths that begin the family's fall. This complete new English translation is published in six volumes; this is Volume 4 of 6, and the whole set is also available as a bundle. It is one of the long narratives that shaped Chinese fiction, full of household detail, comedy and grief, and it reads straight through like any great novel.
