Tale of Heroic Sons and Daughters, Volume 4
Tale of Heroic Sons and Daughters (兒女英雄傳)
Thirteenth Sister is a swordswoman travelling under a false name to avenge her father. At a lonely inn she rescues the gentle young scholar An Ji from bandit monks, and the story of the two of them, chivalry and family, sword and examination hall, unfolds in the lively spoken Beijing of the nineteenth century. Tale of Heroic Sons and Daughters is one of the most entertaining of all Chinese novels, the ancestor of the martial-arts heroine. This fourth volume completes the novel with An Ji's examinations and career. This complete new English translation is published in four volumes; this is Volume 4 of 4, and the whole set is also available as a bundle. It is one of the long narratives that shaped Chinese fiction, full of household detail, comedy and grief, and it reads straight through like any great novel.
