海上花列傳

The Sing-Song Girls of Shanghai, Volume 1

The Sing-Song Girls of Shanghai (海上花列傳)

by Han Bangqing (1856–1894, late Qing)Translated by Valentin Sarić

The Sing-Song Girls of Shanghai follows the courtesans and their clients in the brothels of the International Settlement in the 1880s: banquets, gambling, opium, jealousy, money and the slow ruin of a country boy who comes to the city. Han Bangqing wrote with an almost cinematic realism, and the novel is now seen as a masterpiece of Chinese fiction. This first volume introduces Zhao Puzhai's arrival in Shanghai and the households of Shen Xiaohong, Huang Cuifeng and Zhou Shuangyu. This complete new English translation is published in two volumes; this is Volume 1 of 2, and the whole set is also available as a bundle. It is one of the long narratives that shaped Chinese fiction, full of household detail, comedy and grief, and it reads straight through like any great novel.
