太平廣記

Extensive Records of the Taiping Era, Volume 11

Extensive Records of the Taiping Era (太平廣記)

by Li Fang, editor (925–996, Northern Song)Translated by Valentin Sarić

The Extensive Records of the Taiping Era, compiled at the Song court in 977–978, gathers some seven thousand tales from the Han to the early Song: immortals and alchemists, monks and magicians, ghosts, foxes, dragons, dreams, omens and wonders, sorted by subject into five hundred scrolls. This eleventh and final volume covers birds, insects and water creatures, the far peoples beyond the borders, and the miscellaneous records that close the collection. This complete new English translation is published in eleven volumes; this is Volume 11 of 11, and the whole set is also available as a bundle. Each volume stands on its own and can be opened at any page. Names are given in modern pinyin and the stories are rendered in plain, lively English, so they can be dipped into at random or read straight through, a feast for lovers of ghost stories, myth and folklore.
