The Orchid Dream, Volume 1
The Orchid Dream (蘭花夢奇傳)
Song Baozhu, a girl raised as a boy, passes the examinations, becomes an official and leads armies, while hiding her identity from everyone except the man she loves. The Orchid Dream is a remarkable nineteenth-century novel of a woman's genius and the price she pays for it. This first volume follows Baozhu's upbringing, examinations and early career. This complete new English translation is published in two volumes; this is Volume 1 of 2, and the whole set is also available as a bundle. It is one of the long narratives that shaped Chinese fiction, full of household detail, comedy and grief, and it reads straight through like any great novel. Few of these novels have ever been available in complete English form, and this edition lets English readers follow the whole story from the first chapter to the last.
