The Plum in the Golden Vase, Volume 5
The Plum in the Golden Vase (金瓶梅)
The Plum in the Golden Vase takes a minor episode of the Water Margin and turns it into the first great Chinese novel of domestic life. Ximen Qing, a pharmacist turned official in a small town, collects wives, lovers, money and influence; Pan Jinlian, Li Ping'er and Pang Chunmei fight for position in his household. The book is a merciless portrait of greed, sex and corruption, and of how they destroy everyone they touch. This fifth volume completes the novel with the scattering of the household, Wu Song's revenge and the fall of the dynasty. This complete new English translation is published in five volumes; this is Volume 5 of 5, and the whole set is also available as a bundle. For adult readers: the book contains explicit sexual content.
